St Clare's – So were the sixth form imbeciles or something?

November 21, 2006 – Jo says: We know that a sixth form did exist at St Clare's, cos in book five we learn that Alma Pudden came down from that form. We don't hear anything else about them though. Why, for instance, were the sixth form not involved in the dance that Mirabel had cancelled so she could hold a meeting? More to the point, were they even AT the meeting? I guess they must have been as Mirabel later said that only Felicity and Jane out of the school had not been there, but we don't hear of them being there. Why is it that Hilary and the twins were the ones who took the other kids out of the hall? What was the head girl of the sixth - and hence the whole school - doing at that time? What were the rest of the sixth doing? Did Hilary leave them in there to get burned alive as they were too stupid to move?! ;)
November 26, 2006 – Meg says: I know! And the fact that there was no one suitable to be sports captain? What ever happened to girls like Tessie who were in second form when the twins etc were in first form? Shouldn't Tessie and Winnie and co be in the sixth form when the twins are in fifth form?
November 28, 2006 – Ming says: Probably the older girls (sixth formers) don't attend meetings called by younger (fifth formers) girls. If they weren't at the meeting, the fifth formers would be the eldest girls present so they would have to manage the other girls. The sixth probably joined them in the garden from somewhere else.
November 30, 2006 – Jo says: But Mirabel said that EVERYBODY in the school was at the meeting except for Jane and Felicity. How come she didn't suspect someone in the sixth? You'd think she'd at least have mentioned that they weren't present! And yeah, the games captain thing didn't make any sense. There must have been SOMEBODY in the whole of the sixth who was suitable to be captain.
December 12, 2006 – Kaycee says: Er, maybe Mirabel thought that the sixth were far too grown up to even think of doing it!
December 12, 2006 – Aliceadie says: That's a good question. Perhaps EB forgot about the sixth form, or maybe, for some reason, most of the sixth form went to other schools. Mirabel might have been too high-and-mighty to include the sixth form in the meeting. Or maybe the people who moved into the sixth were too stupid or lazy to be any kind of leaders, but the people who could have been head-girl were staying there for an extra year, and needed to give the fifth form a chance...
January 12, 2007 – Jeni says: More fine tooth comb stuff we shouldn't care about. EB obviously left out characters not pertinent to her stories. I read that book also, and honestly, didn't even notice the absence of the 6th formers. I was too busy following the plots and the excitement in the book. In other words, I didn't 'miss' any characters I didn't know!
May 22, 2007 – Elizabeth Howes says: It is interesting, though, that a "Sixth Formers at St Clare's" was never written. I don't know about everyone else, but I would have loved to read about Pat and Isabel's experiences as head-girl (like Darrell's in Last Term at Malory Towers). Actually, I once drafted a plot and characters for a "Sixth Formers" book, but gave up as I didn't think I could do justice to the series!!
November 17, 2008 – Edward Jameson says: For Elizabeth Howes, a "Sixth Form" book was written, by Pamela Cox. I haven't read it myself, but there seems to be mixed opinions about it: some say it's rubbish and some say it's very well-written, true to the style of EB. You'll have to read it to find it out for yourself! ;-). Edward.
January 29, 2012 – Gillian says: "Yes, I agree! " (Hold on, I'm adding something as well) It is pretty strange that the sixth weren't there. Maybe the sixth did not attend meetings called by lower formers (they had more important things to do than listen to Mirabel! ) and so weren't expected to be there. Or maybe EB just missed that out. When you've written as many books as her, minor mistakes are natural.
March 29, 2017 – Lemons says: I like the sixth form book that Pamela Cox wrote, but I don`t like the fact that they didn`t say what was the secret that Fizz had until almost the end of the book. Also what happened to the second formers? In the the sixth book they only send for first formers when first and second formers are supposed to do jobs for them? I know that a second former Shelia was told to fetch the Lacey twins but still! Also where were the fifth formers in this book?
