Mystery (Five Find-Outer) Series – Bets' name

May 12, 2014 – Paul says: After seeing Bets referred to as "Betsy" online, I was wondering why she never goes by her real name of Elizabeth?
Fatty says... Fatty says: Where did you see that, Paul?
May 12, 2014 – Paul says: It was the Mumsnet site/forums for parents. The poster was praising Enid's depiction of Bets as a role model for girls whose opinions were respected by Fatty but the poster kept calling her "Betsy".
Fatty says... Fatty says: That is a question which you should ask Mumsnet, Paul.
July 1, 2014 – Farwa says: Bets probably never called herself "Elizabeth" either because it's too long or because everyone called her Bets instead.
Bets says... Bets says: Elizabeth is her first name, and she would be called that in more formal situations, such as in school. Bets is short for Elizabeth and she would be known by that elsewhere.
July 3, 2014 – Paul says: Speaking of nicknames and the Find-Outers, Isn't "Daisy" a nickname for Margaret?
Bets says... Bets says: Is it is.
May 25, 2015 – Nithya says: I think the name Bets is cute. Nicknames doesn't matter. And Elizabeth is such a long name too, Besides, in my team, The Terrific Three, I give code names for my two friends. Example: I'm called as T. 1, my friend is T. 2 and so on. I don't know whether Bets is a code name or just a nick name. Nithya.
Buster says... Buster says: Bets is the shortened form of Elizabeth, Pip is short for Philip and Daisy is short for Margaret.
June 24, 2017 – Avan N. Cooverji says: Elizabeth and Margaret are among my favourite names. Shortening Elizabeth to Bets sounds very nice and suits Bets of the Five Find-Outers to a T. I think the short form of Margaret is Daisy and if that is the case, the Daisy of the Five Find Outers has a lovely name also. In fact all the names of the Five Find Outers are lovely names and when shortened suits them very well. Here I mean Larry for Lawrence and Pip for Philip though for Fatty his real name of Frederick is the best , still for the part he plays , Fatty is right and more importantly is the fact that he is sport enough to accept it.
July 5, 2017 – Avan N. Cooverji says: Adjectives alphabetically that can apply to Fatty :- eg. ALERT Fatty (Just put the adjective before his name) : Alert, Bold, Curious, Daring, Efficient, Fearless, Good, Honest, Inquisitive, Jumpy, Knowledgable, Loyal, Mindful, Naughty, Openhearted, Perfect, Quick, Racy, Strong, Truthful, Useful, Valiant, Wise, Xmassy ( he has that merry personality, makes you feel Xmas is near)Youthful, Zippy ( he is always on the go).
October 16, 2023 – Hannah says: Following on from Paul, is Daisy a nickname for Margaret in the real world? Or is it something created just for the FFO series? Apologies if this sounds like a silly question, I've only ever known one Margaret, and she liked to go by Maggie!
Daisy says... Daisy says: Daisy's name was Margaret. In the first book they are telling Fatty their names. "Mine is Laurence Daykin," said Larry. "Mine's Margaret Daykin," said Daisy.
October 17, 2023 – Hannah says: Thanks for the reply Daisy! I know that her name is Margaret, I was wondering if the nickname Daisy is commonly used for Margarets, or was made up for the FFO series.
Daisy says... Daisy says: Daisy is a common name for someone called Margaret, Hannah.
October 18, 2023 – Nigel says: Although the recent posts have nothing to do with Bets, I thought this might be of interest: Daisy is a feminine given name. The flower name comes from the Old English word dægeseage, meaning "day's eye". The name Daisy is therefore ultimately derived from this source. Daisy is also a derivative for Margaret, because Marguerite, the French version of the latter name, is also a French name for the oxeye daisy.
Fatty says... Fatty says: Thank you, Nigel. We are indebted to you for this information - something even I didn't know.
October 18, 2023 – Barbara Cox says: Daisy will probably use something like Margaret Day as an adult as "Daisy Daykin" sounds about as credible for a grown woman in a profession as modern baby girl names like "Maisie-Lou". Your beautiful baby girl will also be a grown woman but so many mothers ignore that.
Fatty says... Fatty says: What is wrong with Margaret Daykin? In any case, she would probably have had a married name as an adult.
October 26, 2023 – Hannah says: Thank you Nigel for that information! You truly learn something new everyday.
