Talk About Blyton!

Malory Towers – Casting of Malory Towers film

June 23, 2007 – vinayak says: I don't know if this is a good topic but I just thought I could share with you all this little, sweet, (boring for some) topic. I just thought that if there would be a Malory Towers film, who would be in it as Darrel, Gwen, Alicia, Sally and so on. I have ended up with Emma Watson being Darrel and the Prf. McGonnagal (God knows her real name) for Miss Potts. Suggestions please?
July 30, 2007 – Emma says: Hey, I reckon this is a good idea even if it might never happen (I would go and see it if it did happen though). Well, another idea for either Irene or Belinda in The Worst Witch -- the girl who plays Mildred Hubble could be either of them. Cheers, Emma
July 31, 2007 – Emma says: Okay, I am adding again, just wondering for everyone if there was a Malory Towers movie or movies, would you go and see it? it doesn't matter how old you are, I am 18 and I would go and see it. Okay, cheers. Emma
August 1, 2007 – Laura says: O, heck yes!! Of course I would go and see it. I'm 27 now, I still read the books now and then, so I would certainly go and see the movie. Maggie Smith seems a good idea for Miss Pots. (Yes, God might know her real name, and so does imdb :P) Emma Watson for Darrel, I do not think that's a good idea, she is already so popular as Hermione, I don't think she should play a child's role again. In fact, if they start making the movie now, she would be too old to be the twelve year old Darrel.
August 3, 2007 – Jeni says: Emma, age doesn't matter, I'd go to see an Enid Blyton movie if I were 18 or 81! If I make it to 100, I'd still go see it, walker, wheelchair, hearing aids or whatever. Does that answer your question? Oh by the way, for me to see the movie however, it'd HAVE to be exactly like the original story, and with actors that seem like clones to the original characters. If not and if the story is changed at all, I'm just plain not interested in putting money into the pockets of the producers, directors, actors or whoever's hand is out for my money.
August 3, 2007 – Emma says: Laura what you say makes sense but it was a good idea, vinayak, so I think my character would be to old as well. I think in this we would have to think of younger actresses but we could just say who we would like even if it is not realistic. anyway it is good to know that I am not the only one re reading Malory Towers even now.
August 9, 2007 – Spoorti says: Is the girl above me Emma Watson?
Inspector Jenks says... Inspector Jenks says: You wish! :-)
August 15, 2007 – Zehra says: I am a big fan of Malory Towers. I know that Emma might be old for Darrel but I can't think of anybody else. She is a fabulous actress. Maggie Smith is the right choice for Miss Potts. Dolores Umbridge (don't know her name) was a good choice for Mam'Zelle Dup'ont.
August 28, 2007 – Emma says: Sorry for my very, very late reply, I have not been on for a while. No, Spoorti, I am not Emma Watson, I am Australian and am 18. I wish I was but sadly no I am not. Emma
August 31, 2007 – MJKB says: I agree absolutely with Jeni. I would hate to see an updated 'Grange Hill' type version of Malory Towers or, worse still, an American High School one!!! The girls would have to play lacrosse and wear baggy old brown uniforms. Judith Dench for Miss Potts.
September 2, 2007 – kiwimusume says: I'm not sure if I'd go to see it. I've seen so many books get changed completely when they get made into movies - either changing the tone of the story completely, or drastically changing some of the characters, or adding a whole bunch of stuff that wasn't in the book to "spice up" the story or something. I've seen some good adaptations too, but I think I'd get the DVD and watch it at home instead, so that if anyone did get murdered I could at least throw things at the screen and yell "THAT'S NOT WHAT HAPPENED! YOU MADE THAT UP!" There's a teen actress in NZ who looks kinda like how I always pictured Darrell: click [link] target="_blank">here. Whaddaya think?
September 2, 2007 – Emma says: Hey kiwimusume. Is that the girl out of Whale Rider or have I got her mixed up? (sorry, I know I have strayed a bit off topic.) I am not sure if it would fit. But it could work. Em
September 3, 2007 – MJKB says: In answer to above - cut the girl's hair and she'd be spot on.
October 24, 2007 – charmene says: Yeah, I would definitely go and see a Malory Towers film! I simply love the books. I think that Emma Watson would be a good person for Darrell, but she may possibly be a bit old.
November 1, 2007 – Lucy says: Hi everyone, a Malory Towers movie sounds fantastic! In the mean time, can anyone suggest movies I can see that are that sort of 'boarding school' genre? I'm thinking along the lines of 'A Little Princess' xx
November 13, 2007 – prathyusha says: Wow! What an idea. It'd be great to see the movie as long as the story isn't changed.
April 17, 2009 – Aamana says: OK I think Emma Watson would be good in the role of Darrell! Even if she is to old.
February 2, 2011 – Sofia Aggelidou says: Guys I don't know about your dreams of Malory Towers being a film but if I could convince somebody or even play in the film, well, that would be AWESOME! In Greece I am 100% sure that anyone in my country reads Enid Blyton! Ok they read but they just read the books for fun. When they finish a book like Blyton's they say: Hey everyone look at me, I have just finished my 20th book! I believe that all the children in the world should read Enid Blyton and if they can't read her books they can see them (if they go on TV)! My, your, OUR favourite author!
August 10, 2012 – Anonymous says: I think that Annabeth (Percy Jackson) would be good for Gwen!
August 10, 2012 – Julian says: Not really up on younger actors - but how about Dame Maggie Smith as Miss Grayling?
Bets says... Bets says: That's a fantastic choice, Julian.
August 11, 2012 – Saky says: Annabeth - Alexandre Daddario?
August 12, 2012 – Saky says: Na, that won't work out because Gwen has blond hair. Can we stick to character please?
Fatty says... Fatty says: Why? Film companies don't!
August 12, 2012 – Saky says: And, as far as I know, Maggie Smith has cancer. I don't know if she's okay now, though.
Fatty says... Fatty says: Dame Maggie was given the all clear in October 2009. Hopefully, she is still in good health.
August 13, 2012 – Saky says: Fatty, film companies look out for profit only. They only think about how they can make money out of a film. Let's not get so low, please? P. S I hope I didn't insult anybody or anything. If I did, I'm sorry, but my opinion remains the same.
August 13, 2012 – Jeni says: Fatty's not being "low" - he's only stating the truth. Film companies really don't care, and yes, it's all about profit (and greed) for them. In another world, it would be all about 'character' and not about greed. Unfortunately, that's not the world we live in today.
Fatty says... Fatty says: Thanks, Jeni. I didn't have a clue what Saky meant!
August 14, 2012 – Saky says: Yeah Jeni, maybe I was a little rude to Fatty. Fatty, I'm sorry!
Bets says... Bets says: Really, Saky, you have to learn to state your opinions in a respectful manner.
August 14, 2012 – Saky says: Yes Bets, I know. I have been accused of that before and I am trying to control that. However, in this case, I actually didn't mean to hurt Fatty. I just got carried away in the flow of typing out. Again, I'm sorry.
Bets says... Bets says: Well this isn't a chat page where whatever you type is seen after you press enter, here you have the opportunity to think and reread your message before you submit it. Thank you for your apology.
August 14, 2012 – Jeni says: Everybody just need to realize that Fatty and Bets are here for a purpose: To monitor things. Hence, they both should be respected. They're here to help keep this site a FUN place for us all. They both already have extremely busy lives, yet they somehow find the time to be on EB.net. For that, we all should be extremely grateful to them both. So we all need to carefully re-read and proof read our comments - BEFORE we hit the "Post This" button!
Fatty says... Fatty says: A timely reminder, thanks Jeni. I have had to delete several messages lately due to terrible spelling and punctuation. I appreciate that English may not be a mother tongue for all, but most mistakes are due to typos and carelessness.
August 20, 2012 – Paul says: Emma Watson is an interesting suggestion. Wouldn't be the first time that Hollywood had "teenagers" that were well into their twenties!
August 20, 2012 – Jeni says: Just my opinion, naturally - but I wouldn't set my watch by anything "Hollywood" does. (aka "Hollyweird"). To allow Hollywood access to any of Enid's scripts, would surely be to sully her stories and introduce filth, for sure. The Hollywood I enjoyed, was the Hollywood of decades ago. To quote Julie from the "message board" - we want to preserve the "childlike innocence" of Enid's stories to the best of our ability.
Fatty says... Fatty says: Never mind Hollywood, look what good old English Southern Television did to some of the Famous Five stories!
August 22, 2012 – Jeni says: I agree, Fatty. Some things are better off left alone. EB's stories can totally stand on their own without any help (or embellishment, tweaking, additions, or adjustments) from anyone.
October 30, 2012 – Phyllis Haldane says: I know this is a liitle late, but Saky (Aug 11 2012), in movies they don't really take care of these things. If you've read the Percy jackson books, you'll know that Annabeth is supposed to have grey eyes and "blonde hair curled like Cinderella". Alexandre is a brunette, right? Also, the movie's nothing like the books. It's actually lame : I mean, in the movie, the part where Annanbeth fights Percy during Capture the Flag- its so stupid. What happened to Ares' children? Anyway, I think she still would be good for Gwen (if she dyed her hair!) Even Luna Lovegood would be fine. And McGonagall would be perfect for Ms potts!
December 28, 2013 – Cassie says: Emma Watson would be perfect for Darrel, I think. Maybe, Abigail Breslin for Alicia?
Bets says... Bets says: Huge age difference, don't you think?
April 9, 2014 – Bea says: I would love to see this made into a film or a play. I know people would probably want to be Darrell or Alicia or even Sally, but I've always wanted to play Mary-Lou in a theatre version of this!
April 23, 2017 – Paul says: Emma Watson is 27 this year. She looks young for 27 but certainly couldn't pull off the 12-18 required for Darrell in an MT film. (especially not the "12" part!)
