Self-Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing

In my last post I mentioned that I would self-publish my book, Island of Fog, when it's finished. My exact words were, "I've decided this is the way I'm going to go, for various good reasons." Well, I'm sort of like a pendulum when it comes to self-publishing. One minute I think, "Yes!" and the next I think, "Hmm, maybe not." [More]

Writing, writing, writing

I realize I've been very quiet lately (shame on me!) but I have a very good excuse: I've been busy writing. I mentioned in a previous post, Feeling an urge to write, that I'd dusted off my old novel, Island of Fog, and had plans to get it finished. Well, I've written quite a bit in the last month, something like 21,000 new words in addition to numerous read-throughs and edits to older chapters. Previously I had 12 chapters completed, but now I'm on Chapter 18, about 68,000 words in total so far. [More]

Children should watch more TV instead of playing outside

Edit: Don't take this tongue-in-cheek title literally! TV has a bad reputation. It's known as an "idiot box," an evil contraption that corrupts young, innocent minds. It's also known as an "electronic babysitter" or a "glass teat" on the basis that it occupies kids for hours while mothers and fathers get on with stuff around the house — the only downside being that kids miss out on quality playtime outside in the fresh air. "Kids should read more," say disapproving analysts. [More]

Feeling an urge to write

The title of this post is ironic since my last post was over two weeks ago! Nevertheless... I don't believe in fate but it seems I've had several "signs" lately saying I should brush the dust off my unfinished novel, Island of Fog, and start writing again. The first sign came from the Yahoo Group — recently Michael Edwards finished his chapter (actually two chapters) for the latest Round Robin, The Jungle of Adventure, and then it was my turn. For those who don't know, a Round Robin is where a group of people write a short story or novel, with each participant contributing a piece. [More]

Islands, castles, tunnels... and UFOs

I've been amazed at the number of comments I've received about playhouses, not just through this blog but via email and so on. I had no idea the building of a playhouse would excite so many adults! Teehee! Well, I've done nothing to it since Lily's birthday, but need to get back out there sometime and do a few things. Meanwhile, I've been working like a beaver this week and have got a lot done, catching up with my website work. [More]
